Press Release

AUGUSTA – U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) today announced that Richmond County would receive $4,819,759.05 in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for debris removal from the ice storms earlier this year. The funding is in addition to the more than $6.7 million awarded to the county last monthThis announcement is for a single award for Richmond County. Depending on the number of applications submitted, more funding announcements could be made in the future once applications are reviewed.

“Our counties need this support from FEMA from the storms earlier this year,” said Congressman Barrow.  “The costs of cleanup were high, and many were left to pick up the tab. It’s important for us to give our local communities the resources they need after a disaster like the ice storm, and we welcome these funds from FEMA.”

“We appreciate FEMA and Congressman John Barrow for the great efforts to secure these funds which will help Richmond County recoup some of the costs of cleanup we incurred earlier this year,” says Mie Lucas, Disaster Preparedness Coordinator for the Richmond County Emergency Management Agency.  “We have more work to do to get FEMA to reimburse what we spent, but, we’re well on our way.  We’ll continue to work with our federal partners to ensure our region gets the assistance we need from the aftermath of this severe weather.”
