I applaud President Obama for using his legal authority to improve our broken immigration system and prevent the unnecessary deportation of millions of members of our community. While the president's actions are a crucial step in the right direction, only Congress can provide the permanent solution necessary to fix our broken immigration system, and I will continue to fight for passage of comprehensive immigration reform legislation.

I encourage the HHS Blood Safety Advisory Committee to revisit their recommendation and hope this is only the beginning of a conversation to change outdated and discriminatory policies, bringing equality for the LGBT community while still protecting the U.S. blood supply.

This week, I visited O'Hare Airport to review their passenger processing from the three African countries most affected by Ebola. Along with my trip to O’Hare, I have been briefed by many state and federal agencies and want to be clear that while it’s always good to be vigilant about your health, there is no immediate cause for alarm about an Ebola outbreak in the U.S.
