Byrne Votes to ‘Save American Workers’

Apr 3, 2014
Press Release

Washington, DC – April 3, 2014 – Today, Representative Bradley Byrne (AL-1) supported passage of H.R. 2575, the Save American Workers Act. Introduced by Representative Todd Young, this bill would change the destructive 30-hour threshold for classification as a ‘full-time employee’ under ObamaCare to 40 hours.

A study by the Hoover Institution finds that the 30-hour designation places 2.6 million workers making less than $30,000 annually in danger of having hours cut as businesses are forced to reduce hours and limit hiring to avoid expensive fines. A majority of those at risk are between the ages of 19 and 34, 90% lack a college degree, and 63% are female. By raising the threshold to 40 hours, this bill will provide greater job security for millions of Americans.

Byrne said: “ObamaCare is striking at the very heart of the American economy, placing workers at risk of having hours cut and forcing small businesses to make tough choices on whether to limit growth to avoid expensive fines. This law threatens to create a new class of part-time workers forced to find 2 or more jobs just to get by. This doesn’t represent the promise of the American dream so many have risked their life to protect.

“Today, the House is taking action to save the American worker from further harm. By changing the threshold back to 40 hours, we will provide job security and greater opportunity for millions of Americans.

“This doesn’t change the fact that I continue to support a full repeal and replacement of the ObamaCare law. It is becoming clearer every day as the American people are forced off their existing coverage, subjected to skyrocketing premium costs, and prevented from keeping their doctor, that this law is a destructive force for families and workers across our country. I will keep fighting to ensure ObamaCare is not allowed to hurt workers in Southwest Alabama.”
