Byrne Supports Religious Freedom in HHS Mandate Cases

Mar 25, 2014
Press Release

Washington, DC – March 25, 2014 – Representative Bradley Byrne (AL-1) released the following statement as the United States Supreme Court began hearing oral arguments today in the Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood cases challenging the required coverage of potentially life-terminating drugs and procedures under Obamacare, as mandated by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Conservatives argue the mandate forcing employers to provide access to these types of insurance policies is a broader violation of religious freedom as guaranteed in the Bill of Rights.

Byrne said: “As I travel across Southwest Alabama, I continue to hear my constituents’ grave concern regarding the Obama Administration’s attack on Christian principles. This nation was founded in the Judeo-Christian tradition that has been the bedrock of our success for centuries.

“The opponents of Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood argue the scope of this case is small. However, the implications of this decision will be far-reaching, setting precedent on whether the government can force individuals or businesses to purchase a good or service to which they morally object. I believe this is a slippery slope that opens the door to frightening abuses of power by the federal government.

“I pray the Supreme Court will realize the weight of this decision on the moral fabric of our nation. Moving forward, I will do everything in my power to ensure the basic rights of our citizens are protected from government overreach.”
