Representative Bradley Byrne

Representing the 1st District of Alabama

Byrne Receives Education and the Workforce Subcommittee Assignments

Jun 24, 2014
Press Release

Congressman Bradley Byrne (AL-1) today received his subcommittee assignments for the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Byrne will serve on the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education as well as the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions.

Byrne said: “I am pleased with today’s subcommittee assignments. Education policy and labor law are two areas where I have significant experience and interest. I believe it should be a priority of the Congress to reduce the federal government’s role in education policy, and the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education puts me in a great position to advocate on behalf of Alabama’s students, teachers, and administrators.

“There is also no doubt that under President Obama the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has seen its power and influence grow in an alarming way. As a member of the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions, I look forward to supporting our nation’s workforce in the constant battle against the strong arm of bureaucratic influence.”

Education and the Workforce Chairman John Kline (MN-2) said: “Congressman Byrne is already helping to address a number of national priorities, including finding ways to strengthen America’s higher education system. I am confident he will provide invaluable insight and expertise through his service on these important subcommittees.”

Congressman Byrne was appointed to the Committee on Education and the Workforce in April. Byrne is also a member of the Committee on Armed Services and Committee on Natural Resources.

Congressman Byrne has been involved at various levels of education policy in the state of Alabama, first serving on the State Board of Education from 1995-2003. He was elected to the Alabama state Senate representing the 32nd District in the fall of 2002, serving on the Education Policy and Education Budget Committees from 2003-2007. In 2007, Congressman Byrne was selected by Governor Bob Riley to serve as Chancellor of the Alabama Community College System, where he served from 2007-2009.

Byrne is the only Member of Congress from Alabama serving on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
