Byrne Attends Hearing with Education Secretary Arne Duncan

Apr 29, 2014
Press Release

Washington, DC – April 29, 2014 – Today, Representative Bradley Byrne (AL-1) attended a House Education and the Workforce Committee hearing on “Reviewing the President’s Fiscal Year 2015 Budget Proposal for the Department of Education” to hear testimony from Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

Byrne said: “I thank Secretary Duncan for his testimony today on the future of education policy for our children. Unfortunately, while we share the goals of increased performance and a better quality of education for our children, the Secretary and I have stark philosophical differences on how to achieve those goals.

“As a former member of the Alabama Board of Education and Chancellor of the Alabama Two-Year College System, I know firsthand that we must enact policies at the federal level that return decision-making authority back to state and local entities, instead of placing this power in the hands of federal bureaucrats. We should empower teachers, administrators, and parents on the front lines to make decisions that fit the needs of each individual child while focusing on lasting reforms that reduce duplicative and ineffective programs. I look forward to working with Chairman Kline and my colleagues on the House Education and the Workforce Committee to bring about these positive reforms.”
