Rep. Schneider Applauds Extension of Important Benefits to Same Sex Couples, Urges Further Action

Jun 20, 2014
Press Release

U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) applauded the Obama Administration’s announcement today that most federal benefits would be extended to same sex couples throughout the United States, and Schneider called on Congress for further action on behalf of same sex couples who are still denied equal access to Social Security benefits.

“No couple making the lifelong commitment of marriage should be denied the federal benefits they are entitled to,” Schneider said. “The Obama Administration has made great strides for equality, and now it’s time for Congress to act swiftly to enact the Social Security Equality Act, ensuring all married couples—including same-sex couples—are eligible for the full-scope of federal benefits they deserve, regardless of where they live.”

In August 2013, Schneider helped introduce the Social Security Equality Act, which would guarantee that same-sex couples are not denied the Social Security benefits.

The Obama Administration has worked to extend the full range of marriage benefits to same-sex couples following the United States v. Windsor Supreme Court decision, the Social Security and veterans benefits remain the exceptions.

A vocal and active supporter of LGBT equality, Schneider helped introduce the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), the Student Non-Discrimination Act and the Respect for Marriage Act – all of which aim to include LGBT Americans under the umbrella of protections enjoyed by the vast majority of the public.
