U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider met Tuesday with representatives from Chicago’s Response Center, SHALVA, Jewish Child & Family Services and JCARES at a Safe Place in Waukegan. They discussed the importance of the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization and its implications for their organizations.

VAWA provides funding to enhance investigation and prosecution of violent crimes against women, imposes automatic and mandatory restitution on those convicted of such crimes, and funds domestic violence prevention and support programs.

JCFS manages a domestic abuse prevention and education program through Jewish Community Abuse Resources, Education and Solutions (JCARES). SHALVA gives free confidential domestic abuse counseling services to the Chicago Jewish community. If VAWA is not reauthorized, funding provided
through JCARES to police and synagogues for education on how to report domestic violence would be affected.

On Feb. 12, S. 47, the five-year reauthorization of VAWA passed the Senate 78 – 22 with the help of both Illinois senators, Richard Durbin and Mark Kirk. Meanwhile, Schneider is a cosponsor of the House version, H.R. 11, along with 9 other representatives from Illinois and 200 total cosponsors.
