After months of symbolic legislation aimed at pleasing its political base, the House Republican majority Tuesday unveiled its plan for America’s future. Sadly – but not surprisingly – it looks a lot like the standard right-wing schemes that reward Wall Street while kicking more Americans out of the middle class.

Today is an historic day for peace, freedom, and democracy. I want to offer my congratulations to the Egyptian people on their determination and amazing success. Today the Egyptian people delivered a stiff rebuke to Al-Qaeda-ism, violence and religious extremism. Through peaceful protest Egypt has taken a monumental step toward true democracy.

I am greatly saddened by the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and numerous others today in Tuscon, Arizona. Since entering Congress with her in 2007, I have known Gabby to be a selfless public servant, dedicated to her constituents and her country. This shooting is an attack on democracy itself. We can never allow violence, threats, and intimidation to prevail.
