Early last month, extremists attacked our diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt, killing Libyan Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans following the release of a crude anti-Islamic video. The reaction has sparked urgent discussions about the “Arab Spring” transforming into an “Islamist Winter.” Some of my colleagues in Congress say the only option for the United States is to disengage from the region..

After three stalled diplomatic attempts to stop Syrian President Bashar Assad's government from killing thousands of unarmed civilians, it's time for the international community to intervene. The United States should partner with its allies to establish safe zones on the borders of countries neighboring Syria.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Keith Ellison released the following statement on the death of Osama bin Laden by U.S. Armed Forces.

The death of Osama Bin Laden marks the most significant accomplishment yet in the war against Al-Qaeda. I commend the work of the U.S. Armed Forces and intelligence community for finding the world’s most wanted terrorist. I also wish to recognize President Obama for his decisive leadership as Commander in Chief.

Today the Egyptian people delivered a stiff rebuke to Al-Qaeda-ism, violence and religious extremism. Through peaceful protest Egypt has taken a monumental step toward true democracy.

Fifteen years of sanctions on Iran have taught us one important lesson: They have not produced the intended results. More sanctions are unlikely to produce results now. In fact, additional sanctions, while satisfying some, are more likely to produce results that we do not intend. If we impose increased sanctions, we will likely strengthen President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s hand and risk snuffing out the emerging democracy movement in Iran.
