Environmental Stability

Rep. Ellison is committed to the protection and stewardship of the natural resources that enable Americans to enjoy clean air, drink clean water, and eat food without toxins. It is this commitment to sustainable environmental practices that led him to help found Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota (EJAM), which focuses on resolving environmental issues that lead to health disparities in communities of color.

The State of Minnesota is known for its waterways–especially its lakes–and its enjoyment of outdoor activities.  Keith has introduced legislation to protect Minnesota's waterways as the state addresses the potential invasion of the destructive Asian carp.

The congressman has introduced or supported legislation that addresses the challenge of global warming, protects the landmark Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, and promotes a green economy by increasing our investment in green technology.

Earlier this week, I was on MSNBC's Up With Chris Hayes about jobs, the Occupy Wall Street movement and other issues. During the show I said I'm a fan of health and safety -- not regulations. I said that some regulations have created jobs, since the industries being watched have to comply with the rules. For example, technological requirements can spur engineering improvement, which means employing engineers.

My thoughts and prayers are with the people and communities in Minneapolis, Fridley and St. Louis Park affected by tornadoes that struck on Sunday. I grieve for the loss of life and the broad scale destruction left in the wake of this disaster.

Right when it looked like the Environmental Protection Agency would score a touchdown by curbing air pollution, it settled for a punt.

Last year, the EPA was on track to complete regulations on the toxic air pollution caused by industrial boilers. But in mid-December, the agency decided it needed an extra 15 months to issue the regulations instead of meeting a court-scheduled deadline of Jan. 16, 2011.
