Geraldine soon to replace septic tanks with sewer systems

GERALDINE, AL (WAFF) -

Septic tank problems will soon be a thing of the past for folks living in Geraldine. They will soon be on a new sewer system.

This is big news for the town of Geraldine; the mayor said not only for the residents but for businesses as well.

U.S. Congressman Robert Aderholt came back from Washington, DC to make the announcement.  

A new sewer system for Geraldine will cost approximately $3.5-million; $2.5-million will be grant money, the remainder a loan to the city.

The wastewater treatment plant is expected to be built on Lebanon Road and service approximately 174 residents and 40 businesses to begin with. That is about 75 percent of the town.

The mayor said it's great for residents but a key in luring new business as well.

"Most of the restaurants won't even talk to you if you don't have sewer. Because of all their waste and byproducts, it is very necessary to them to have the sewer system so that is a must to attract new businesses," said Mayor Chuck Ables.

The project will not be complete anytime soon.  The mayor anticipates the completion date for the project will be sometime in the fall of 2014.
