2nd Amendment

I strongly support our constitutionally recognized right to keep and bear arms. As a lifelong sportsman and proud gun owner, I know that the Second Amendment is not negotiable to the people of Oklahoma’s First District.

The horrific mass killings in places like Newtown and Columbine have led some people to mistakenly call for more gun control. I believe these voices are wrong. Criminals will always find ways around firearms laws or will simply find other means to commit horrific acts of violence. Regulation almost always serves to intrude upon the rights of law abiding citizens while providing no deterrent to people bent on breaking laws.

We have thousands of gun laws already on the books at the federal, state, and local levels. We should enforce existing laws rather than creating new ones.  I will continue to oppose any and all legislation that would unconstitutionally restrict the right to keep and bear arms.

Here is where I stand on several specific issues related to the Second Amendment:

·         I oppose universal background checks that will do nothing to stop criminals but will turn the Second Amendment from a “right” protected by government into a “privilege” granted by government.

·         I oppose bans on so-called “assault weapons” which operate like many other firearms, but may look “militaristic”.  Banning guns based on their appearance is unreasonable.

·         I oppose bans on high capacity magazines.  These bans are based on arbitrary numbers and past implementations have proven ineffective in crime reduction.  Criminals will bring as many magazines as they need and, by definition, have no respect for any kind of ban or restriction.

I am committed to advancing legislation in the House of Representatives that protects our Second Amendment rights.  I have co-sponsored a number of relevant bills with my conservative colleagues this Congress.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

I am co-sponsoring a bill to make it easier for veterans to exercise their 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms.  I’m concerned that some First District veterans are being denied their rights without due process.

The so-called "Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013" will not accomplish its objectives, but it will certainly infringe on our 2nd Amendment rights and make criminals out of law abiding citizens.  Many objections have been raised and more will be said after the legislation is actually presented in the Senate.  Consider just one example.

Washington, DC, February 12, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Congressman Jim Bridenstine commented in advance of tonight’s State of the Union Address to Congress:

I expect tonight’s State of the Union Address to be a wish list for liberals.  The President will use the word “balanced” to call for more taxes, more debt, and more spending.  There is nothing balanced about the President’s big government approach.
