Watch Rep. Gwen Moore spar with Stephen Colbert

By Rob Thomas

U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore gave as good as she got when she appeared on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" Thursday night.

The Democratic representative sat down for a lengthy interview with Stephen Colbert's faux conservative pundit as part of Colbert's ongoing "Better Know a District" series. Moore was the 70th congressperson to appear on the series, but only the first from Wisconsin.

The duo sparred on Paul Ryan and Scott Walker, pantomimed going on a motorcycle ride together, and in the end, shared a big hug.

After describing Moore's Milwaukee district, including such notable natives as Spencer Tracy and Liberace ("who spent years concealing a dark secret — he's from Wisconsin!"), Colbert interviewed Moore in her Washington office.

"I assume you got the job through affirmative action," Colbert said, later calling Moore "openly black."

Moore told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Thursday that she had turned down Colbert's interview request several times before finally agreeing.

"There was a lot of energy there," Moore said. "I just went with it. I think that is what made it a lot of fun."

All kidding aside, Moore has worked tirelessly in Congress for the rights of working-class Americans, minorities and women. In March, she spearheaded the push for a more robust Violence Against Women Act against Republican opposition.
