Milwaukee’s May Day march for immigration reform was smaller than in recent years, but organizers said they were happy with the turnout. Several thousand people marched to a downtown Milwaukee park, where Congresswoman Gwen Moore called for changes in the immigration bill that’s pending in the Senate. She said the bill needs a path to citizenship for the nation’s 11-million undocumented immigrants – and it needs to reunite families separated by deportations. Others called for stronger protections for workers. Moore told the marchers to keep fighting to improve the immigration bill – which opponents call a version of amnesty. The Milwaukee event was put on by the immigrant rights’ group Voces de la Frontera – and it was one of numerous May Day marches throughout the country. Group director Christine Neumann-Ortiz said this year’s event was smaller because organizers only had a couple weeks to plan for it. That’s because a lot of time was spent on having a strong presence at a national immigration reform rally in Washington on April 10th.
