Stephen Colbert skewers Milwaukee in interview with Rep. Gwen Moore

By Jeff Engel

Satirical comedian and faux-conservative pundit Stephen Colbert featured Wisconsin’s 4th congressional district in Wednesday night’s episode of The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, conducting a ridiculous interview with Democratic Rep.Gwen Moore and skewering Milwaukee and several of its best-known brands.

Wisconsin’s “Fightin’ 4th” was the 70th installment of Colbert’s 430-part series, “Better Know A District.”

Harley-Davidson Inc., Milwaukee Brewers and Johnsonville sausages all got shout-outs, as did classic TV shows “Happy Days” and “Laverne & Shirley,” both set in Milwaukee.

“I was just taking a mid-show break to enjoy a refreshing can of Milwaukee’s Best, which got its name because it’s the best way to wash out the taste of Old Milwaukee,” Colbert said as he introduced the segment, sipping out of a can of Milwaukee’s Best and holding up a can of Old Milwaukee. “The 4th is also home to Major League Baseball’s Milwaukee Brewers in recognition of the city’s beer industry and if you drink enough of their signature product, every night is bobblehead night.”

At that point, video of a presumably drunken baseball fan nodding off in his stadium seat played in the background.

Colbert sat down with Moore in her Washington, D.C., office. Besides talking about big government, the economy and Republican Rep. Paul Ryan’s federal budget proposal, Colbert also asked Moore if she thought Gov. Scott Walker is a “great governor or the greatest governor?”

Moore, an ardent Walker opponent politically, kept it civil and said that she has known Walker since he was a young man and that he has a nice family.

But she said she thinks Walker has thrown a number of groups “under the bus,” such as women, the elderly, students and teachers.

“That’s a metaphor, right?” Colbert asked with a straight face.

“He disadvantaged them economically,” Moore replied.

Moore told Colbert she has never ridden a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, only sat on one and fantasized about riding.

They then embarked on an imaginary ride on a Harley-Davidson, during which Moore was a good sport in playing her part.

The interview ended with a hug.

Watch the two-part interview here. (It’s about 15 minutes total.)
