Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NAVY VETERAN GARLAND DENNY AND CONGRESSMAN ROBERT PITTENGER ANNOUNCE NEW LEGISLATION TO ASSIST VETERANS

CHARLOTTE – Since 2007, local Navy veteran Garland Denny has waged a long and often lonely fight, advocating for a special postage stamp or coin to raise money for veteran services.

Tonight in Waxhaw, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) and Mr. Denny will announce the first draft of new legislation to create a special semi-postal stamp to fulfill Mr. Denny’s dream.

“Mr. Denny is a true and distinguished patriot who recognized a need and has dedicated his time and resources to meeting that need,” said Congressman Pittenger.  “Mr. Denny thought outside-the-box and developed a solution that will increase funding for veteran services without increasing federal spending or the tax burden.  We are honored to work with Mr. Denny on this important project.”

Last week, Congressman Pittenger’s staff met with officials from the White House and United States Postal Service to discuss the latest proposal, which would create a semi-postal stamp raising money for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment.  Following that meeting, the White House encouraged Congressman Pittenger to proceed with legislation.

Mr. Denny and Congressman Pittenger will officially announce the legislation tonight at Congressman Pittenger’s Union County town hall meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Cuthbertson High School (1400 Cuthbertson Rd.).  Congressman Pittenger and Mr. Denny will be available to speak to the media at 6:15 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.

Media interested in covering the town hall event and legislative announcement should contact Jamie Bowers (704-619-3288) to discuss logistics.
