US CHAMBER, LABOR AND AMERICAN PEOPLE SUPPORT RECOVERY PLAN

Following President Obama’s signing of an economic recovery plan, business and labor groups across the nation, as well as a bipartisan majority of America’s governors and a wide majority of the American people are voicing strong support for the plan.  The Washington Post reported today that its latest Washington Post/ABC News poll shows nearly 2 in 3 Americans (64%) support the economic recovery plan.  The U.S. Chamber of Commerce issued a news release today applauding Congressman Gary Peters for his support of the recovery plan (Please see news release below from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.  Also below is a list of hundreds of organizations across the country supporting the economic recovery plan.)

“The economic recovery plan means over 100,000 more jobs for our state, tax cuts for four million residents and thousands of small businesses and provisions to invest in new auto technology and spur new car sales,” said Congressman Peters.  “That’s why the plan is endorsed by business groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and National Automobile Dealers Association, labor groups like the AFL-CIO and UAW, and a wide majority of the American people.

“The Chamber of Commerce and AFL-CIO don’t always agree, but they agree we need the job-creating investments and tax cuts this plan provides.  This plan is so broadly supported because it is clear to people and organizations across the political spectrum that action was needed to help revive our ailing economy.”

U.S. Chamber Applauds Congressman Peters for Supporting Legislation that Creates Jobs
Michigan Set to Gain 109,000 Jobs Over the Next Two Years

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 23, 2009   Contact: J.P. Fielder 202 463 5682

WASHINGTON, DC— The U.S. Chamber of Commerce applauded Congressman Gary Peters (D-MI) for backing the recently-passed economic recovery plan, a major first step toward igniting consumption and investment, creating jobs and jumpstarting Michigan’s economy.

“Since the elections, we’ve worked with the President and Congressman Peters to quickly pass a bill that would apply a defibrillator to the economy and shock it back to life,” said Bruce Josten, the U.S. Chamber’s executive vice president of Government Affairs.

“While not everyone in Washington or Michigan agrees on every item in this package, the whole is more important than the individual parts,” Josten said.  “Our economy is in uncharted and dangerous waters and inaction from Washington is not an option.”

According to the Obama administration, Michigan’s 9th Congressional District is set to gain 7,300 jobs over the next two years, thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“Now that this bill is a law, the real work must begin,” Josten said.  “To quickly put Americans back to work and stimulate long term growth, the spending from this bill must be allocated quickly but responsibility”

The U.S. Chamber is the world’s largest business federation representing more than
3 million businesses and organizations of every size, sector, and region.
