REP. GARY PETERS ON TODAY’S POSITIVE GM AND CHRYSLER ANNOUNCEMENTS
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Gary Peters, whose district is home to Chrysler World Headquarters, General Motors plants and more auto suppliers than any district in the country, issued the following statement today following the announcements that GM will repay the entirety of the remaining $5.8 billion in loans it received from the U.S. and Canadian governments ahead of schedule and that Chrysler ended the first quarter of 2010 with a positive operating profit of $143 million:
“Today’s announcements show that supporting our auto industry and the millions of families whose jobs depend on it was the right thing to do.
“Our automakers have become more globally competitive and are now rebounding after a severe downturn brought on by Wall Street greed and the credit crisis. We must now focus on creating an environment to help small businesses across Michigan that stand ready to supply the next generation of advanced technology vehicle components.
“The progress we're seeing leaves little doubt that the American automobile will live on, and millions of Americans will be able to keep their jobs.”
