Peters Statement on Proposed Strategy to Defeat ISIS

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Gary Peters (MI-14) released the following statement on the Obama Administration’s proposed strategy to confront and defeat ISIS:

“ISIS is a brutal terrorist group that poses a threat to our national security and has shown its capability for true evil through its executions and torture of men, women and children—including two Americans. I support the use of airstrikes to degrade ISIS, in Iraq as well as Syria, and I support efforts to equip and train moderate Arab forces to help in this fight.

"All airstrikes and other counterterrorism efforts directed towards ISIS must be done in consultation with Congress and in conjunction with a coalition of European and Arab nations. As a former officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, I take very seriously any action that involves our men and women in uniform, and I remain opposed to the use of U.S. combat ground troops. This proposal offers a strategic approach to destroy the ISIS terrorists without American combat ground troops.

“After hearing President Obama's stance and participating in a classified briefing with State Department and military officials, it is clear that now is a time for national unity and purpose—a time for us to come together in a bipartisan spirit to focus on defeating these enemies of free people around the world. When Americans are united around a common goal we are at our best. While Congress and the American people must debate any military action, I hope this will be a time when American greatness outshines the politics of the season."
