On 50th Anniversary of Equal Pay Act, Peters Urges End to Wage Discrimination

On the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy signing the Equal Pay Act into law, U.S. Representative Gary Peters reiterated his commitment to ending wage discrimination. Peters helped introduce the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would help ensure that woman earn equal pay for equal work as their male counterparts.

“As a father, I want to live up to the promise that my two daughters have a bright future ahead of them where their hard work is not discounted because of gender and they are paid fairly for their professional accomplishments,” Peters said. “Fair is fair and paycheck discrimination goes against the fundamental principles of our country that working hard and playing by the rules earns every man or woman a chance at achieving the American Dream.”

Peters is proud of his fight for Michigan families by helping to introduce the Paycheck Fairness Act and Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to stop wage discrimination. In Michigan, women still earn only 68 percent as their male counterparts.
