M1 Light Rail back on the table

Rep. Gary Peters leaves meeting with M1 Rail Coalition, Transportation Secretary, Governor, Mayor and area leaders encouraged by news

Detroit MI, - Today Rep. Gary Peters attended a meeting with the M1 Rail Coalition, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Governor Snyder, Mayor Bing, Senators Levin and Stabenow, members of the Congressional delegation and local leaders to discuss the future of M1 light rail for the Detroit Region. The M1 Coalition now has 90 days to complete a plan to incorporate this 3.4 mile light rail line as part of a regional transit system. As of right now, private investors have committed $80 million to the project and if they can reach $100 million and the plan is validated, it is a likely possibility that the Federal government could be in a position to provide a $25 million grant to complete the project.

I'm strongly encouraged that M1 light rail is back on the table for Detroit,” said Rep. Gary Peters. “The strong commitment of area business leaders to improving economic development in Detroit through an investment in light rail has helped drive consensus about the importance of public mass transit for our region. I left today's meeting strongly encouraged that we are moving toward cooperation and solutions for a comprehensive regional transit plan that will spur new private investment and job creation.”
