Congressman Gary Peters statement on the unveiling of Rosa Parks Statue in the Capitol

Parks is the first African-American woman to be honored with a full sized statue in Statuary Hall

Washington, D.C. - Today U.S. Rep. Gary Peters released the following statement after attending a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall where President Obama unveiled the newest addition, a statue of Rosa Parks. Ms. Parks is the first African-American woman to be honored with a full sized statue in Statuary Hall where she will join many of our nation's greatest citizens.

“I was honored to join President Obama and Congressional leaders to honor the life and legacy of Rosa Parks today. As the first African-American woman to be honored with a full sized statue in the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall, Ms. Parks continues to blaze trails even today. Because of the courage Rosa Parks displayed in the face of unimaginable discrimination, our nation is a stronger, more equal place for all of our families. It is so moving that Rosa Parks, who lived so much of her life in Detroit, will now be memorialized in the Capitol for all time.”
