Budget and Spending

I am gravely concerned by Washington’s out-of-control spending and borrowing which is harming our economy today and threatening the future of the American Dream.

During President Obama’s first two years in office, federal discretionary spending doubled, the budget deficit nearly tripled, and the national debt became larger than our entire economy.    This mountain of debt is the main reason our economic recovery has been so sluggish. 

Since Republicans took control of the House in 2011, spending has fallen by the largest amount in decades and the deficit has been cut in half.  However, this year’s deficit - $680 billion – is still the fifth-largest in history and the debt is over $17 trillion.  More work needs to be done.

To put our fiscal house in order, I support significant, across-the-board cuts to federal spending.  I also support a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.

We must act urgently to protect our children’s future and make sure they do not become heirs to a bankrupt nation.
