Second Amendment

Congressman McKinley is a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights and as a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, he will fight to defend the Second Amendment from those who wish to erode gun rights.

The Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States protects the fundamental right of an individual to keep and bear arms, including for purposes of individual self-defense. Congressman McKinley has co-sponsored legislation to protect the rights, privileges and immunities guaranteed to a citizen of the United States.

That being said, after the recent tragedies in Colorado and Connecticut, several pieces of legislation were introduced to increase regulations on firearms, while others have started to discuss bills that deal with ammunition sales, magazine sizes, licensing and even bans certain types of firearms.

These and others will be at the forefront of the national discussion for months to come. We must continue to remember that limiting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens will not change the behavior of those determined to use firearms to commit horrific crimes.

Part of the solution also includes enforcing and reviewing existing laws, changing how government and society should deal with mental illness, and addressing violence in popular culture.

While considering a whole host of legislation, Congressman McKinley continues to stay focused on promoting gun safety and protecting the Second Amendment rights of American citizens.
