I participated in a great panel discussion this weekend with CONNECT, Paul Jacobs from Qualcomm, and Gregory Lucier from Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute about promoting San Diego’s #innovation economy and how to keep the US competitive. I’m proud to be an Ambassador to DC about innovation in San Diego.

The culture of complacency and mismanagement at the VA must end. On May 28th, I called for Secretary Eric Shinseki to resign. While, I feel strongly that the changes needed are much bigger than just firing one person, this is the right start.

I proudly supported the bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) – it’s good for San Diego and protects the military assets that are a key driver for our economy.
I also spoke about my amendment to ensure economic opportunity and equal rights while we fulfill the promise of higher education made to our servicemen and women.

Watch my speech on the floor: Scott's Amendment to NDAA to promote economic opportunity and equal rights

It was great to have joined with Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington - PPMW on May 19th. The ability of women to control their own healthcare decisions is not a social issue, it’s a civil right. I’ll keep fighting for it in Congress.

The plan from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released on June 2nd will reward states, like California, that are finding innovative solutions to reducing carbon emissions, cutting down on pollution and smog, and providing cleaner air for our children and seniors. It is time to #ActOnClimate

The EPA is taking public comments about their proposal for the next four months. Submit your thoughts here: http://www2.epa.gov/carbon-pollution-standards/how-comment-clean-power-plan-proposed-rule

A report released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York showed that student loan debt has reached $1.1 trillion while annual pay for young people has stayed stagnant. Rep. Mark Pocan, Senator Kristen Gillibrand, and I have introduced a bill to reduce student loan debt and make college more affordable by refinancing federal student loan rates down to 4.0%.

An interesting article on the issue by Vox can be read here: http://www.vox.com/2014/5/14/5714546/student-debt-is-going-up-graduates-annual-salaries-arent
College grads are earning less and less while they accumulate more and more debt.

Enjoyed meeting with NAMM , Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Taylor Guitars to discuss the importance of promoting science, technology, engineering, arts, and math education, and using music and art to foster creativity in our students.

There may be debate in Congress about climate change, but there isn't among scientists. As we face prolonged droughts and extreme weather, we must prepare our communities so we mitigate damage, while we also address the causes. It is time for Congress to get to work and #ActOnClimate.

I have legislation to help communities access information on best practices for disaster preparedness called the STRONG Act, and another bill to reduce the use of super pollutants like methane and black carbon called the SUPER Act.

Earlier this Spring, I wrote a letter to Bureau of Reclamation encouraging them to help fund the expansion of the Sweetwater Authority’s desalination project. Not too long ago we heard that they will receive a $1.5 million federal grant to expand their facility, which will bring locally-sourced water to the region. Finding diverse, local sources of water will become even more important in future years as we battle droughts.

I had a productive discussion with Third Way on May 19 about the critical role energy plays in our global competitiveness, and the need for a strategy to provide clean, abundant, and inexpensive energy for every American.

U.S. Congressman (CA-52) - San Diego, Poway, Coronado
Introduction

Congressman Scott Peters serves California’s 52nd Congressional District. Scott Peters is a civic leader who has made improving the quality of life in San Diego his life’s work. He is a problem solver with a record of bringing people together to get results.

His career in public service includes serving as San Diego’s first City Council President, where he pursued greater accountability and efficiency in government. Peters created a new Council/Mayor form of government with an independent budget review function.

Scott also served as a San Diego Port Commissioner, and is the immediate past chairman of the San Diego Unified Port District – a major economic engine that produces tens of thousands of high-skill, high-wage jobs for San Diegans. The Port manages the state tidelands in and around San Diego Bay, which produces $3.3 billion in direct economic impact to the region and supports jobs for more than 40,000 San Diegans.

Scott earned his undergraduate degree from Duke University magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa and worked as an economist for the United States Environmental Protection Agency before attending New York University School of Law. He and his wife of 26 years reside in La Jolla, California and have a son and daughter.
