Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-4) released the following statement commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision:  

 

“Sixty years ago, the Supreme Court helped ignite the ongoing struggle for civil rights as it rejected the notion that our education system is and should be ‘separate but equal.’ Though we have come a long way since then, our journey is far from over. Extreme disparities still exist in access to quality education, and many of our students continue to learn in segregated classrooms. 

 

“I was sickened to learn that Wisconsin was recently rated the worst state for black children, according to the study ‘Race for Results: Building a Path to Opportunity for All Children.’ Among other indicators, the study found that white fourth grade students were nearly four times more likely than black fourth grade students to have reading proficiency. When examining the disparity for math, the numbers are even more staggering. Among eighth graders, white children were nearly six times more likely than black children to be proficient in math. 

 

“When our students fall behind, our nation suffers. If we are to survive, we must provide equal access to quality education for all of our students, adequate funding for our public schools and necessary resources for our children so they are better equipped to learn. 

 

“Today, not only functions as a reflection on the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, but let it also serve as a call to action. Let us come together to improve our nation by increasing educational opportunities for our kids.”
