Marriage

I believe that marriage is intended to be between one man and one woman for life.

Marriage is one of civilization’s oldest institutions, and the family is our most local form of government.  When a person is in need, the spouse and family should be the first line of support.  Therefore, any law that breaks down the marriage relationship or the family structure places more responsibility on government.  For this reason, promoting marriage and the family must be a top priority of lawmakers.

Marriage has recently been in the spotlight as the Supreme Court has heard two different cases dealing with the issue of same-sex marriage.  The arguments in the Supreme Court, on its steps and throughout our nation have been passionate on all sides.  My position is that the institution of marriage should be protected by law, and I would support a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman.  Separate legal partnership arrangements can be defined without intruding on and undermining the constructs of traditional marriage.

As the husband to a wonderful wife and father to three great kids, I have personally experienced the benefits and blessings of having a strong marriage and family.  By all accounts, strong marriages and families greatly benefit our society as a whole.  I will do all I can to ensure that the government not do anything to weaken or undermine marriage or the family.

Jan 14, 2014 Press Release

Statement from Congressman Bridenstine:

Today a federal judge, Terence Kern, in Tulsa, wrongly declared that Oklahoma’s constitutional amendment protecting the institution of marriage violates the federal Constitution.  The amendment to the State constitution was approved by 75% of voters in 2004.

I stand squarely in support of traditional marriage.  Many studies have shown that both a mother and father are essential for raising successful and healthy children.
