South Belt-Ellington Leader

Why I ran for Congress

Rep. Pete Olson

The reason I ran for Congress was to ensure that our children have a better quality of life than what we now enjoy. However, I strongly believe that our children are in jeopardy of becoming the first generation of Americans that will be worse off than the preceding generation. In 20 months, the Obama Administration has created record debt, record expansion of government, and most frightening a record intrusion into our businesses and lives. These policies are job killers – plain and simple.

We are at a crossroads in our country’s history – either we fight back and make tough decisions that will allow America to be more competitive or we continue to allow President Obama and Nancy Pelosi to grow government and push through a job-killing agenda that stifles innovation and entrepreneurship. I am not alone, job creators across the country agree that this Democrat Congress and Administration is harming our future. Recently at a Technology Policy Institute dinner, Paul Otellini, the CEO of Intel had the following to say: “The next big thing will not be invented here. Jobs will not be created here. I think this group [democrats in Washington] does not understand what it takes to create jobs. And I think they're flummoxed by their experiment in Keynesian economics not working.”

“Every business in America has a list of more variables than I've ever seen in my career. If variables like capital gains taxes and the R&D tax credit are resolved correctly, jobs will stay here, but if politicians make decisions the wrong way, people will not invest in the United States. They'll invest elsewhere.”

Mr. Otellini, a job creator, understands that every time government expands its bureaucracy, mandates, and regulatory powers, our freedoms contract. Right now, the freedoms that have allowed America to be an economic power are in jeopardy. This unchecked expansion by Obama and Pelosi is creating great uncertainty in the Texas economy and for employers across the nation – consider what small businesses are seeing out of government today:

ObamaCare has imposed new regulations and taxes on businesses as well as killing innovation and causing great uncertainty in the medical field. Allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire will impose the largest tax increase in American history, these tax increases will hurt small businesses, forcing employers to lay off workers in order to stay competitive. In the Gulf of Mexico, we are witnessing companies pack up and leave the country due to the deep water drilling moratorium, killing thousands of jobs in the Gulf Coast region. I am committed to doing everything in my power to make sure that America stays a global economic leader, but I need your help. We need to send President Obama a clear message that the private sector does not exist to support the public sector!

We need to stand up and fight for our freedoms – our children’s future depends on it.

Very Respectfully,
Congressman Pete Olson
