Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman once said, "You cannot simultaneously have free immigration and a welfare state." More recently, the Heritage Foundation's Robert Rector, a laudable scholar in his own right, proved that Friedman's claim is true.
America is home to the best colleges and universities in the world, including Iowa State University. Generously, our immigration policy allows an unlimited number of students from across the globe to enroll at our universities by granting students temporary legal resident status through what is known as a student visa.
Last week, this newspaper, as part of its "Roses & Thistles" column, suggested that my efforts to repeal Obamacare may not be rooted in my sincere desire to "serve the public." That is a baseless charge, but I appreciate the newspaper allowing me to address it here:
March 23, 2013 marks the third anniversary of ObamaCare. We knew that ObamaCare was bad from the start and three years later it is STILL bad for Americans. ObamaCare has proven time and time again that it is bad for individuals trying to afford health insurance, bad for businesses, and bad for job-seekers.
Everyone who takes an oath of office, whether it be for Congress, the judicial branch or the presidency, vows to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution." Because of this oath, the American people rightfully expect their public officials to do their job. In Congress, that includes passing a budget.
"I want fourth district Iowans to have access to the information and resources that they need, and I look forward to using new offices to make that happen," said Congressman Steve King.

As we near the end of 2012, the focus of the political world likely will be on the massive income and business tax increases scheduled to go into effect after midnight Dec. 31.
With the first frost, the leaves turn and begin to fall, the air is filled with the rich aroma of the crop drying down in the fields, and the hunting season is upon us. This time of year, more than any other, gives us the opportunity to reflect on the right to keep and bear arms that we enjoy because of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
America has the strongest and finest fighting force the world has ever known, and for the past several years, much of that fighting force has been focused on restoring peace and bringing prosperity to the Middle East and Afghanistan. That region, which has harbored the militants who attacked our nation on Sept. 11, 2001, is home to much instability and insecurity.
Starting a new school year is typically filled with excitement and many changes, but this year kids and parents across our nation are dealing with big surprises in the lunch room. Thanks to new calorie bracket regulations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, children are going hungry in our school cafeterias.
