Dear
Friend,
One
of
the
most
important
roles
for
Congress
is
to
honor
our
promises
to
those
serving
our
country,
veterans,
and
their
supportive
families.
In
the
last
few
weeks
I
have
had
the
opportunity
to
join
Secretary
of
Defense
Chuck
Hagel
and
Marines
at
Camp
Pendleton,
and
open
a
VA
facility
in
Sorrento
Valley.
My
office
is
also
starting
the
annual
process
of
helping
students
get
a
nomination
to
one
of
our
nation’s
service
academies.
If
you,
or
someone
you
know,
are
interested
in
attending
a
service
academy
next
year,
please
see
below
for
more
information.
Meeting
with
Marines
at
Camp
Pendleton
Recently
I
had
the
honor
of
joining
Defense
Secretary
Hagel
on
his
visit
to
Camp
Pendleton.
Secretary
Hagel
answered
questions
from
the
Marines
and
thanked
them
and
their
families
for
their
continued
sacrifices
to
protect
our
country.
The
Secretary
focused
his
discussion
on
the
need
to
ensure
our
servicemembers
can
successfully
transition
to
civilian
life.
In
San
Diego
we
take
that
goal
very
seriously,
which
is
why
earlier
this
year
I
brought
together
military
commanders,
non-profit
organizations,
and
veterans’
community
leaders
to
launch
the
Military
Transition
Support
Project
(MTSP).
MTSP
will
provide
new
veterans
with
a
central
portal
to
access
vital
information
on
housing,
benefits,
and
employment.

Opening
a
Local
Veterans’
Healthcare
Clinic
I
was
pleased
to
help
open
the
new
Department
of
Veterans
Affairs
(VA)
healthcare
clinic
in
Sorrento
Valley.
This
facility
will
make
accessing
care
more
convenient
for
thousands
of
San
Diego’s
veterans.
Our
veterans
and
their
families
deserve
the
care
and
benefits
that
we
promised
them.
Filling
staff
shortages
and
vigilant
oversight
will
go
a
long
way
to
improving
what
has
long
been
an
unresponsive
and
broken
VA
system.
