2014
Dear
Friend,
In
recent
weeks
I
have
had
the
privilege
of
meeting
with
several
San
Diegans,
including
a
group
of
Aaron
Price
Fellows
and
Howard
and
Jean
Somers,
Coronado
residents
who
are
working
to
make
positive
changes
in
the
San
Diego
community
and
our
country.
This
newsletter
also
has
an
update
on
the
disappointing
Hobby
Lobby
Supreme
Court
case
and
a
recent
staff
transition
in
my
office.
Joining
the
Somers
to
Raise
Awareness
for
Veterans
Since
their
son’s
death,
Dr.
Howard
and
Jean
Somers
have
become
tireless
advocates
for
raising
awareness
around
Post
Traumatic
Stress
(PTSD)
in
our
military
and
veterans’
community.
I
was
honored
to
join
them
at
a
forum
at
the
American
Legion
in
Linda
Vista.
They
will
also
be
testifying
in
front
of
the
House
Veterans
Affairs
Committee
in
Washington
to
continue
their
focus
on
ensuring
that
our
brave
men
and
women
receive
the
care
they
need
when
returning
to
civilian
life. Scott

Welcoming
the
Aaron
Price
Fellows
to
DC
One
of
my
favorite
things
to
do
in
Washington
is
talk
with
San
Diegans
who
are
visiting
the
Capitol. Recently,
I
had
the
pleasure
of
speaking
with
a
group
of
San
Diego
students
who
were
in
Washington,
D.C.,
as
part
of
the
Aaron
Price
Fellows
program.
The
students
were
also
able
to
hear
from
respected
civil-rights
leader
Congressman
John
Lewis
about
the
importance
of
civic
engagement.
These
all-star
students
had
thoughtful
questions
about
college
affordability,
how
to
get
Congress
working
again,
and
what
they
can
do
to
be
engaged
in
the
San
Diego
community.
This
was
quite
an
impressive
group,
who
I
know
will
have
a
positive
impact
in
San
Diego
and
across
the
country.

Decisions
for
a
Woman
and
Her
Doctor
As
a
husband,
father,
and
longtime
advocate
for
women’s
rights,
I
was
extremely
disappointed
by
the
Supreme
Court’s
ruling
in
the
Hobby
Lobby
Case,
to
allow
corporations
to
decide
which
contraceptives
its
health
plans
will
cover.
It
seems
pretty
clear
to
me
that
women
and
their
doctors,
not
bosses,
should
be
in
charge
of
personal
health
care
decisions.
The
fight
for
birth
control
is
about
much
more
than
family
planning
–
it’s
about
the
right
of
women
to
access
affordable,
safe
preventative
care
wherever
they
live
or
work.
It
is
astonishing
to
me
that
in
2014
we
are
still
having
this
debate.

Transitions
in
my
DC
office
Recently,
Lumay
Wang,
a
Legislative
Assistant
in
my
Washington,
D.C.,
office
who
handled
energy,
environment,
housing,
transportation,
and
more,
headed
off
to
graduate-level
business
school
at
Northwestern
University.
She’s
a
smart,
talented
individual
and
I
want
to
thank
her
for
serving
our
constituents
with
distinction.
Stay

One
of
the
most
important
jobs
I
have
in
Congress
is
providing
a
number
of
constituent

As
