Peters Statement on Executive Action on Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Gary Peters (MI-14) released the following statement after President Obama announced his plan for executive action on immigration:

“Today’s announcement of executive action on immigration reform shows that Congress is truly broken. The President’s limited, temporary action is the direct result of Congress’ inability to make bipartisan progress on this critical issue.

“Congress could solve this problem today by taking the lead and enacting comprehensive immigration reform legislation, which will strengthen Michigan’s economy and middle class. I support the comprehensive immigration reform bill passed by a large bipartisan majority in Senate over 500 days ago, and I have called for an up-or-down vote on this bill in the House.

“We need leadership on this critical issue, and in light of Congress’ lack of action on immigration reform, this will not only help keep families together, but bring workers out of the shadows, conduct background checks, require payment of back taxes and ensure taxes are paid going forward while Congress works on a long-term, bipartisan and comprehensive solution.”
