Peters Statement on Approaching Deadline for Iran Nuclear Talks

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Gary Peters (MI-14) released the following statement ahead of the November 24th deadline for the P5+1 nuclear negotiations with Iran:

“For years the United States has dedicated significant effort to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and ensuring any nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes. As the negotiating deadline with Iran approaches, Congress will need to carefully review any possible agreement to make sure it actually achieves this goal.

“A successful agreement must include the dismantlement of Iran’s nuclear weapons-related infrastructure, Iran abandoning pursuit of a nuclear weapon, full disclosure of its nuclear activities and robust, verifiable inspections and oversight to ensure that Iran does not develop a nuclear weapons breakout capability in the future. I supported the broad-based sanctions that brought Iran to the negotiating table, and I can only support gradual, targeted sanctions relief if an agreement meets these critical goals. A nuclear-armed Iran would destabilize the Middle East and be a threat to the United States and our allies—especially Israel.”
