McCarthy: Our Troops Need Our Support

Washington D.C. – Today, Congressman Kevin McCarthy issued the following statement after the President announced his new and long awaited strategy for Afghanistan. 

“Our troops need a victory strategy in Afghanistan. We cannot allow Afghanistan to fall into the control of the Taliban or become a safe haven for al Qaeda.

“That is why I am glad the President has finally come to a decision in response to General McChrystal’s recommendations to reinforce our troops with the critical resources necessary to support the mission and the new counterinsurgency strategy that the President laid out last April.  In approaching any new decision to send troops into harm’s way, we must ensure that our goals are clear, our strategies can work, and most of all, our troops have the resources they need to succeed.

“Given that the President’s decision differs from General McChrystal’s recommendation, I look forward to also hearing from our commanders on the ground to ensure the President’s decision gives our troops in the field the full resources they need to complete their mission.”
