McCarthy Statement on 1099 Repeal

Mar 3, 2011
Press Release

Washington D.C. – Congressman Kevin McCarthy released the following statement regarding the passage of the 1099 repeal legislation:

"This is one more day that House Republicans are fulfilling our Pledge to America. In the Pledge, we said we would repeal the 1099 provision in Obamacare in order to protect small businesses, their workers, and American taxpayers from a burdensome mandate that only serves to hinder job growth. I've heard from business owners throughout my district and across the country and they all say the same thing: this mandate is a huge burden that forces them to devote resources to filing paperwork instead of hiring.

"At the age of 20, I started a small business, a deli, named Kevin O's. Like most small businesses, I didn't have much capital. In creating the deli, I didn't even have enough money to buy a countertop, so I built one in my garage with my father. It cost a little more than $600 in materials. If this provision had been in place then, I would've had to fill out a 1099 form. I wouldn't have been able to afford to hire an accountant to do that, and that's basically what the government is asking small businesses to do with this mandate. We know that small businesses are the engines of job creation in America – let's unshackle them from onerous regulations. We must remove the obstacles that are impeding economic growth in this country, and that is what we are doing today with the repeal of this 1099 provision."
