McCarthy Statement In Support of The Balanced Budget Amendment

Nov 18, 2011
Press Release

Washington D.C. – Congressman Kevin McCarthy released the following statement after voting yes on the Balanced Budget Amendment (H.J. Res. 2):

"The new House Republican Majority vowed to lead America in a new direction. Today's vote on the Balanced Budget Amendment is the cornerstone on our pledge to put America back on a path to prosperity. Just one year ago, the American people issued a strong rebuke of the reckless spending habits of Washington. That message was lost on House Democrats as they spent the last few weeks actively working to defeat this amendment that a significant majority of Americans support. The national debt has just reached $15 trillion as a result of the out-of-control spending spree in recent years. Republicans have worked to end the stream of spending, but the Balanced Budget Amendment will help prevent the return of such fiscal recklessness going forward. It is simple: the federal government shouldn't be spending money we don't have, and saddling our children with crippling debt.

"Even though this amendment did not receive the super-majority needed for it to reach the Senate, House Republicans will continue our efforts to restore fiscal sanity in Washington in our pursuit of a balanced budget. The mountain of debt facing our country threatens our short and long-term economic growth, and quite simply it threatens the American dream. I was proud to vote for the Balanced Budget Amendment today, and I thank Rep. Bob Goodlatte (VA-6), Rep. Mike Pence (IN-6) and many of my bi-partisan colleagues for their leadership and tireless work on moving this crucial amendment forward in the legislative process."
