MEDIA ADVISORY: Congressman McCarthy to Hold Service Academy Forum
Bakersfield, CA – Congressman Kevin McCarthy will hold an Academy Forum for students in the 22nd Congressional District who are interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy. The forum will take place on Saturday, October 24, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kern County Board of Supervisors’ Chambers, located at 1115 Truxtun Avenue in Bakersfield.
“I encourage all students interested in serving as an officer in our Armed Forces to attend one of the Academy Nights,” said McCarthy. “The Service Academy Forum provides interested students and parents an opportunity to learn about the application process, academy life, and career opportunities in the military.”
The application procedure to receive a congressional nomination to one of the five academies will be presented, in addition to briefings and video presentations by Congressman Kevin McCarthy and the Service Academy Liaison Officers.
Academy Liaison Officers representing the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy will provide information on life at an academy. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy offers appointments solely on the basis of a nationwide merit based competition, and there is no congressional nomination required. A representative from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy will be available at the Academy Forum to assist local students with the application process.
To RSVP for the forum, please contact the Bakersfield office at (661) 327-3611 or email: RSVP.McCarthy@mail.house.gov.
