Representative Bradley Byrne

Representing the 1st District of Alabama

Our District

The First Congressional District of Alabama is one of the most diverse and unique areas in the entire country. Comprised of the six southwestern counties in the state, it has successfully combined the best qualities found in both metropolitan and rural areas, has retained a strong link to its storied history, and has managed to maintain its easygoing charm while charging ahead into the 21st century.

From the crystal blue waters and white sandy beaches of Gulf Shores to the lush green forests of Clarke and Monroe Counties, this district has something to offer to everyone.

For the outdoorsman, south Alabama is one of the few places where you can hunt deer or turkey in the morning, catch a bass for dinner, and haul in a blue marlin before supper that night.

For the sports fan, Mobile is home to the Senior Bowl college football game, which showcases the best collegiate players from across the country and is played in front of a crowd of thousands and before a nationwide television audience of millions. Likewise, this area is also privileged to have both semi pro baseball and basketball teams.

In terms of education, south Alabama ranks second to none in terms of the number and quality of educational institutions available. In addition to three four-year universities and four community colleges, this area also has the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (offering extended study in the field of marine biology) and the United States Sports Academy (which produces very qualified graduates in all fields of sports science). Additionally, Mobile is home to the annual America's Junior Miss pageant, which honors high school senior women for their outstanding scholastic achievement and community involvement.

Economically, south Alabama farms produce a wide range of fruits and vegetables. The major crops continue to be timber, cotton, and soybeans. In fact, the timber industry - which encompasses everything from the growth and harvesting of timber to the creation of lumber, pulp, and paper - is the district's main employer. Additionally, south Alabama is home to numerous chemical, seafood, shipping, aerospace, medical, and tourism businesses and industries. The City of Foley boasts one of the nation's largest outdoor shopping facilities with over 150 major name-brand product outlet stores.
