Beatty Supports Funding For Our Nation’s Roads and Bridges

Legislation provides $11 billion temporary patch to Highway Trust Fund

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) supported a bill to provide continued funding for our nation’s roads and infrastructure. The Highway and Transportation Funding Act, H.R. 5021, provides a temporary $11 billion allocation to keep the Highway Trust Fund solvent through May 31, 2015.

“This critical legislation keeps our economy moving. Businesses, governments, and transportation users deserve to have safe and drivable infrastructure that is funded in a timely manner,” said Rep. Beatty. “Preventing the Highway Trust Fund from lapsing saves jobs and lives, but as we move forward, I hope Congress will begin funding transportation projects in a long-term and sustainable way.”

“Bringing up this legislation at the last minute follows a year of inaction and irresponsibility by House Republicans. While this bill sustains the Trust Fund temporarily, it avoids tackling the dire need to rebuild and repair America’s infrastructure for the future,” said Rep. Beatty. “I have long-supported fixing the ailing roads and bridges in Central Ohio. With 65% of our nation’s roads in need of attention and a shockingly high number of our bridges in need of significant repair, Congress needs to expeditiously address these challenges in order to invest in our jobs, economy, and future and reauthorize the Highway Trust Fund.”

This bill now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
