Beatty Participates in $227 Million Urban Redevelopment Announcement

Funds provide for Near East Side project championed by Beatty

Columbus, OH – Today, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) participated in a Department of Housing and Urban Development grant announcement at Poindexter Place in Columbus, OH. The $227 million in urban redevelopment funds for the Near East Side will be led by an initial $29.7 million HUD grant funding. Representative Beatty partnered with the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority, The Ohio State University, and Columbus City Mayor Michael Coleman to push this forward this important project.

Throughout a career of working with HUD and other public housing authorities, Congresswoman Beatty has developed a long record of finding avenues to create affordable housing for individuals, communities, and our nation. As a member of the powerful House Committee on Financial Services, and serves on the Housing and Insurance Subcommittee, Beatty used her influence to push forward on this project.

“The Near East Side project is a stellar example of the urban redevelopment that communities across our nation need. The meaningful federal investment provided by this grant will create jobs, repair aging infrastructure, and attract businesses and other opportunities particularly for those who live and work in this storied community,” said Beatty. “This project is a win-win for the community and Central Ohio. I will continue to work tirelessly to provide resources necessary to ensure that all our communities provide a high quality of life and are places where we can live, work, play, and do business.”

Speakers at the event included HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, CMHA President and CEO Charles Hillman, and OSU President Dr. Michael Drake. Over 500 community members attended today’s event.

HUD Secretary Donovan noted, “I could not write this check without the work and efforts of Congresswoman Beatty. Her support and advocacy on housing issues make items like this happen in your community.”

Speaking of her deep connection to the Poindexter community and urban redevelopment Beatty said, “My husband, Otto, and I have deep ties to this community and we are pleased to see the Near East Side receive this significant support. While I work for you in Washington advancing projects like this one, I will never forget my roots or the people I serve in the Third Congressional District of Ohio.”
