Boehner Calls on Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and Other Democratic Leaders to Disavow Murtha Slow-Bleed Strategy

WASHINGTON, D.C. Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) today called on Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), and other Democratic Leaders to disavow the slow-bleed strategy put forth by Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) that would cut off funding and reinforcements for U.S. troops in harms way. Rank-and-file Democrats have begun indicating in media reports that they are uncomfortable with the slow-bleed strategy supported by their leadership. Boehner issued the following statement:

Our men and women in uniform deserve the unflinching support of this Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike. I’m pleased that more and more Democrats are acknowledging from the Murtha slow-bleed strategy to cut off funding for American troops in harms way and deny them reinforcements was the wrong approach. Its just one more sign that Republicans have won this debate, and the American people agree that Congress should lend our full support to our troops on the battlefield.

Its time for Speaker Pelosi, Leader Hoyer, and other leaders of their Party to disavow the Murtha slow-bleed strategy and give our men and women the full support and resources they need to complete their mission. As we move forward, Democrats should think very carefully before they offer yet another proposal that would undermine American troops on the ground, jeopardize their mission to deny al Qaeda terrorists a safe haven in Iraq, or endanger U.S. efforts to help stabilize the new democracy so the Iraqis can take full control of their country.

This mornings Washington Post details how some House Democrats have backed away from the Murtha slow-bleed plan to choke off funding for Americas troops in harms way a plan put together with full backing from Speaker Pelosi. For the full story, click here.

Boehner represents Ohios 8th District, which includes all of Darke, Miami and Preble counties, most of Butler and Mercer counties, and the northeastern corner of Montgomery County. He was first elected to Congress in 1990.
