Ellmers Statement on Supercommittee Failure

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Renee Ellmers released the following statement from her office in Washington this afternoon:

"I had always been cautiously optimistic that the Supercommittee would reach a deal that would be significant and get our spending in check. My Republican colleagues on the panel continued to hold firm on their principle to not raise taxes on America's job creators and in that way it is a victory for our nation. From day one, the Republican led House has continued to lead as President Obama has remained AWOL. We will continue to lead and do what it takes to strengthen our economy and grow jobs."

"The federal government has a spending problem, not a revenue problem, and the time has come to cut back. It's not easy, but it is necessary. My Republican colleagues offered $600 billion in reforms to the tax code in order to get a meaningful, long-term solution. Instead of compromising, the Democrats insisted on focusing their attention toward $1 Trillion in tax increases and placing politics ahead of prosperity. Just as the failed stimulus proved we cannot 'spend our way into prosperity,' we also will never 'tax' our way into prosperity."

"Our economy is being held hostage until next year's election. President Obama and his party in Congress are acting like spoiled children - they take what they want and have a meltdown in the candy aisle when a responsible parent tells them 'no!' The American people demand that we all grow up, balance the nation's checkbook, live within a budget, and stop maxing-out our country's financial future."
