Shoppers turned out in force in Milwaukee for Small Business Saturday, the national, annual event to encourage residents to shop at locally owned, independent businesses during the holiday season.

 

The crowd was just starting to build in Milwaukee's 3rd Ward when Mayor Tom Barrett and U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore arrived at Broadway Paper, 191 N. Broadway, just before 11 a.m. Shoppers packed the nearby Bangles & Bags, 159 N. Broadway, to scoop up deals such as $3 accessories and a free bracelet with purchase.

 

Boswell Book Co., 2559 N. Downer Ave., stayed busy with an "indies first" event with about 10 local authors recommending books and talking about their own works.
