More on Women's Issues
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) issued the following statement upon news that the Susan B. Komen Foundation has decided not to discontinue funding to Planned Parenthood:
New York, NY – Sunday is the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that enshrined in law a woman’s right to choose. At a news conference today at City Hall, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) outlined the many anti-choice actions taken by Republicans in Congress and discussed how women’s rights may be under threat in the coming year. Maloney pointed out that the proposed restrictions are moving far beyond choice, and are now also targeting access to birth control and reproductive health care.
New York, NY - U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens), former Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman, and New York State Assembly Member Brian Kavanagh (D-Manhattan) today urged the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to take action following a recent report in the American Journal of Public Health (attached) showing that women have a 47% greater chance of suffering severe injuries in car crashes than do men - even when wearing seat belts.
Washington, D.C. – Today, Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Chairman of the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee (JEC), and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), former Chair of the JEC, released a new GAO report requested by the JEC that details the gender-wage gap among low-wage and less-educated workers. The GAO report entitled, “Gender Pay Differences: Progress Made but Women Overrepresented Among Low-wage Workers,” shows that, on average, women with a high school degree or less earned lower hourly wages than men with a high school degree or less. Among these less-educated workers, women tended to work in industries and occupations that had lower wages than those in which men worked. The report finds that in 2000, less-educated women earned 81 cents for every dollar men earned. By 2010, the pay gap had shrunk by 5 cents – to 86 cents per dollar.
An amendment by Rep. Chris Murphy (D-CT), based on legislation authored by Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), co-chair of the Congressional Human Trafficking Caucus, was approved today in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs as part of the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA), H.R. 2830.
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), lead sponsor of the bipartisan HR 1269, the National Women’s History Museum Act of 2011, issued the following statement upon its passage out of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
New York, NY – Today at City Hall, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) announced the introduction of H.R. 2759, the Business Transparency on Trafficking & Slavery Act, which would require companies to disclose any measures taken to identify and address instances of human trafficking, slavery, and child labor in their supply chains.
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) and U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley have introduced the Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2011. The legislation helps ensure that more working mothers can continue to breastfeed their babies after they return to work, providing health benefits to their children. The Breastfeeding Promotion Act reflects elements of a 2007 Oregon law passed under Merkley’s leadership to ensure workers have private areas and breaks to pump during the workday.
WASHINGTON, DC-- Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) praised Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’s announcement of Obama Administration approval of the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) recommendations on preventive services, which would make breastfeeding counseling and rental of breastfeeding equipment freely available to women who choose to breastfeed.
Rep. Maloney, Sen. Lautenberg introduce bill to ensure women are not denied access to contraceptives
WASHINGTON, DC – Following the release of an Institute of Medicine (IOM) report recommending that birth control be made available without copays because of its importance for women’s preventive health care, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Sen. Frank Lautenberg introduced legislation to protect a woman’s fundamental right of access to legal contraception.
