WSVN 7 (FOX) Miami: WW II vet honored at Miami Beach High

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A huge honor finally coming to fruition for a war veteran in South Florida.

Seven decades after leaving the US Coast Guard, 92-year-old William Bregman was hailed a hero during a ceremony at Miami Beach High School, Wednesday.

The World War II veteran received his delayed ribbons and medals of honor thanks to Florida congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Last year, the coast guard veteran took it upon himself to fight for what was rightfully his. Bregman said, "I wrote letters and I called and no effect. Called, called your office. My dear congress lady took care of it very quickly. I appreciate it."

Florida representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz said, "I'm so happy, proud to be able to make sure that you're richly deserved tribute through these medals is recognized."

During his four-year tour with the guard, Bregman risked his life to protect our nation's natural resources. During a tour of escorting ships, he and his crew were hit by a torpedo. He survived, but 34 of his crew members, including a dear friend, did not. Bregman said, "One thing I will remember is my buddy on the ship was one of the men killed in the war. I still feel for him."

He said he has now fought hard for what was due him so he could leave a legacy to his loved ones. "My father was in the Navy, and all I have of him is a picture of him in a sailor suit. I wanted my grandson to have at least a record. Hey, I'm 92 years old. I'm not a youngster any more, so I wanted him to have a record so he could remember me. That's one of the things that made me want the medals so much, but I didn't expect that many," he added to laughter.

Bregman was presented a total of 10 medals and ribbons for his service and bravery.
