Local 10 (WPLG) Miami: Venezuelans' set two-day 'Trip For Freedom' agenda to lobby for U.S. sanctions

MIAMI - Venezuelan migrants living though the United States traveled to Washington, D.C., Thursday in solidarity with student protesters.

Three buses and several cars departed from west Miami-Dade's Doral, the city with the highest percentage of Venezuelans. A Local 10 News team is traveling with them.

The purpose of the trip was to ask President Barack Obama to support two bills that would implement U.S. sanctions. The bills were in the House and in the Senate.

On Thursday, the State Department was set to update a Senate committee on the four months of student dissent, and on Friday the House Foreign Affairs Committee will consider a bill to impose U.S. sanctions on Venezuela.

Florida lawmakers working in favor of sanctions:

Democrats: Sen. Bill Nelson, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Rep. Ron DeSantis, Rep. Ted Deutch, Rep. Joe Garcia, Rep. Lois Frankel, Rep. Frederica Wilson, Rep. Patrick Murphy, Rep. Corrine Brown, and Rep. Alan Grayson.

Republicans: Rep. Illeana Ros-Lehtinen, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, Rep. Gus Bilirakis, and Sen. Marco Rubio, who some political experts consider may be a presidential candidate in 2016.
