CBS 4 (WFOR) Miami: Women to Watch: Debbie Wasserman Schultz

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Debbie Wasserman Schultz was the youngest woman ever elected to the Florida State legislature and the first Jewish congresswoman elected from Florida.

Congresswoman, Chair of the Democratic National Committee, wife, mother of three and breast cancer survivor, Debbie Wasserman Schultz is the epitome of a modern American, multi-tasking, working mom.

Here’s a glimpse at the many sides of the multi-faceted Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

“I’m a purse freak,” said Wasserman Schultz. “I like to ferret out a really cool unique purse and you can often find them in hotel gift shops.”

Wasserman Schultz is also a handbag tracker by night as well as a congresswoman, party leader, democratic national chair and master multi-tasker.

She also writes books.

Her latest book “For the Next Generation” offerssolutions for the next generation and is written from the heart.

“If you want to ensure a better world for your children and grandchildren, you cannot help but be inspired by this book,” said Carole King.

“Doing what’s right for the next generation is not an abstract concept,” said Wasserman Schultz. “I have the next generation in the backseat of my car.”

Forget reporting to President Barack Obama, Wasserman Schultz has 14-year old twins and a 10-year old, which might be a little bit more pressure on her.

“Every decision I make, personal or professional, is done in the lens of being their mom and I hope that the book gives people a roadmap, regular people who are frustrated to find the issue that’s most important to them and it gives them guidance on how to make a difference on that issue,” said Wasserman Schultz.

Will you she ever run for President?

“The President asked me to stay on at the DNC and do a full four year term,” said Wasserman Schultz. “So I’m gonna be a part of helping to elect the next president of the U.S. that’s an important responsibility.

As for hair, she likes hers au-natural.

“It’s an ethnic thing, it’s an embrace of my ethnicity but it’s also an embrace of how easy it is,” said Wasserman Schultz.” One of the neat things that’s happened to me over the years is when young girls, often Jewish girls, have stopped me, and this has surprised me, to thank me for wearing my hair curly.”

So the big question is how in the world does she do it all?

“I’m married to ‘Saint Steve’,” said Wasserman Schultz. “That’s the main way I do it.”

Fast fashion is a busy woman’s best friend and for a woman with so many roles, she has to be able to look each part.

“I have to be able to jump from the White House, to jumping on a plane to going to my kids’soccer or volleyball game,” said Wasserman Schultz.

Wasserman Schultz has little time for shopping but she does have a favorite boutique.

“ I found this cool store on South Beach called Chewing Gum, the brand dress is Abe Ribicoff,” said Wasserman Schultz.

All political beliefs and preferences aside, you got to hand it to this working mom.
