I am a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. It has jurisdiction to investigate any federal program and any matter with federal policy implications. I sit on three subcommittees: the Subcommittee on Government Management, Organization, and Procurement; the Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census, and National Archives; and the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs.

WASHINGTON, DC – New legislation in Congress would help ensure that the federal government uses the most accurate methods to collect royalties on natural resources taken by oil and gas companies from taxpayer-owned land. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) introduced the bill (H.R. 6368), which would direct the National Academy of Engineering to conduct a study analyzing methods that could greatly improve the accuracy of royalty collection on the production of oil, condensate and natural gas under leases of Federal onshore and offshore lands and onshore Indian Tribal lands (text of bill).

WASHINGTON, DC – The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities released a new report today examining the high rates of hardship – including overcrowded living conditions, difficulty paying for food and the lack of medical care – faced by African American and Latino families (link to report). The informative report was prepared using data from the Census Bureau’s Survey on Income and Program Participation (SIPP).

WASHINGTON, DC – As the 2010 Census nears, it appears that the Census Bureau is in turmoil. The Director of the Census Bureau, Louis Kincannon, and his top deputy, Hermann Habermann, stepped down from their positions today. The loss of the two top officials at Census on the same day this close to a decennial count appears to be unprecedented.

Washington, DC - A group of House Democrats today called for immediate congressional hearings and investigations into reported efforts by senior Interior Department officials to allow oil and gas companies to cheat American taxpayers out of royalty payments.  Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Congressman Ed Markey (D-MA), Congressman George Miller (D-CA), Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), and other House Democrats sent letters today to House Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo (R-CA) and House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior Chairman Charles Taylor (R-NC), asking that oversight hearings be held on the matter before Congress adjourns for October.

Carolyn Maloney applauded the House of Representatives for passing by a vote of 362-57, H.R. 2965, “The Federal Prison Industries Competition in Contracting Act.” The legislation will require FPI to compete for contracts while continuing to offer rehabilitative work opportunities to federal prisoners.  It will also ensure that contracts are awarded to the company that will provide the best products, delivered on time, and at the best prices.

Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld expressing concerns about the Interim Voting Assistance System (IVAS), which has a stated purpose “to provide information on electronic voting options for service members and other U.S. citizens living overseas.” In her letter, Maloney asked a series of questions about the IVAS program (letter to Rumsfeld).

NEW YORK, NY – Sky high gas prices in the Big Apple are hitting New York families in the wallet to the tune of $880 a year more than what they paid in 2001, according to a new Congressional staff report (click here for report). Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan and Queens) commissioned the report by the Democratic staff of the House Committee on Government Reform, which analyzed gas prices in the New York City metropolitan region and in New York State as a whole over the past five years since President Bush unveiled the Administration’s new energy plan in May 2001.  More than 95% of the recommendations in the energy plan have been implemented.
