I am a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. It has jurisdiction to investigate any federal program and any matter with federal policy implications. I sit on three subcommittees: the Subcommittee on Government Management, Organization, and Procurement; the Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census, and National Archives; and the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs.

WASHINGTON, DC – Provisions championed by Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO), and Rep. Mark Udall (D-CO) to bring transparency to the federal contracting process have been included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2009 (S. 3001), which passed the House of Representatives yesterday.  The bill is expected to be approved by the Senate and the president in the coming days.

WASHINGTON, DC – Legislation that would provide federal employees with four weeks of paid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child passed the U.S. House of Representatives today.  “The Federal Employees Paid Parental Leave Act” (H.R. 5781) was introduced by Representatives Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD), and Tom Davis (R-VA) last year.  House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Subcommittee on Federal Workforce, Postal Service, and the District of Columbia Chairman Danny Davis (D-IL) helped move the bill to the floor.  Senators Jim Webb (D-VA) and John Warner (R-VA) introduced companion legislation in the Senate on Monday.

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) introduced legislation today to compensate Richard Barlow, a former high-level CIA and Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) counter-proliferation intelligence officer.  In the late 1980’s Barlow was essentially forced out of his job after informing his superiors that Congress was being lied to about Pakistan's efforts to acquire nuclear weapons.  Within days after expressing his concerns inside OSD, Mr. Barlow was issued a notice of termination and his security clearances suspended based on allegations that he “intended” to blow the whistle to Congress.  Despite the fact that Barlow was cleared of any wrongdoing after several investigations, he remains unable to collect a government pension.  Rep. Maloney's private relief bill for Barlow (H.R. 6232) would provide him with financial compensation for the some of the losses he has incurred.

WASHINGTON, DC – The “Contractors and Federal Spending Accountability Act” (H.R. 3033), legislation introduced by Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) to create a comprehensive, centralized database that would more efficiently monitor the federal procurement system and help protect U.S. taxpayer dollars, passed the House today.  Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) also introduced the Senate companion of the bill today.  Currently, no central database exists to help procurement officials track fraudulent contractors who do business with the federal government.
